Background of the Study
Community health workers (CHWs) play an essential role in bridging the gap between formal healthcare systems and rural communities. In Niger State, where healthcare infrastructure is often limited, CHWs serve as the primary link for health education, basic medical services, and referrals. Their presence in rural areas has the potential to significantly improve healthcare access by providing culturally sensitive care, increasing health literacy, and reducing the travel burden for residents (Adamu, 2023). CHWs are particularly effective in addressing local health challenges, as they are typically well-integrated into their communities and understand the unique socio-cultural dynamics that influence health behaviors.
The deployment of CHWs in Niger State is aimed at improving service delivery in remote areas where healthcare facilities are sparse. These workers engage in home visits, community education sessions, and mobilization for health campaigns, thereby enhancing preventive care and early disease detection. Despite their critical role, CHWs often face challenges such as insufficient training, lack of resources, and limited integration with formal health systems. These obstacles can impede their effectiveness and limit the overall impact on healthcare access (Bello, 2024). The study of CHWs’ contributions is vital for understanding how community-based approaches can improve health outcomes and reduce disparities in rural settings. By evaluating the effectiveness of CHWs in Niger State, this research aims to identify best practices and areas for improvement that can inform policy and funding decisions (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Rural areas in Niger State continue to experience significant challenges in accessing healthcare due to limited infrastructure, geographic isolation, and socio-economic constraints. Although community health workers have been deployed to mitigate these issues, their effectiveness is often compromised by inadequate training, resource limitations, and poor coordination with formal healthcare providers. As a result, many rural residents still struggle to receive timely and quality healthcare services. The gap between the intended role of CHWs and their actual performance hinders overall healthcare delivery and leaves critical health needs unmet. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of community health workers in improving healthcare access and to identify the barriers that limit their impact, thereby providing evidence-based recommendations for enhancing community-based health initiatives.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on rural communities in Niger State where CHWs are active. Data will be collected through interviews with CHWs, community surveys, and health service records. Limitations include variability in CHW program implementation and potential response bias.
